Diaspora

From the national Archives I was sent my Great great grandfather's army
service records last week.  I knew he met my great grandmother in
Ireland as she always showed Co Tipperary as her birthplace as well as
two of her children . We knew nothing of them until those records came.

John Holland joined the 49th(Princess Charlotte of Wales) Herts regiment
of Foot in 1839 aged 18.  The base was Ireland (Roscrea ?) .He married
Ann Brierley at the Church of Ireland Roscrea on 22 August 1851. She was 20. Her
father was Henry Brierley and her mother was Katherine. he was a boot
and shoemaker in Jail Street.

He served  three and half years in China, the 1st Opium Wars 1840 to
1843. then in the Crimea in 1855,  he was discharged in1860. They came
to Harpenden Hertfordshire.

My great great grandfather William was born in Tipperary. The photo is
of him , his wife Charlotte and daughter Win.

My Grandfather Alfred and his brothers and sisters I knew as a child.
They were a very jolly teasing group. Their parties were all full of
trickery games.

We have known of Ann in our family history for years  so we are
pleased to know about her home town
